Watermark on video: how to add it and remove its background

Video Unique Booster puts your watermark on top of every created video. The watermark can be a *.png image, a *.gif animation or an *.mp4 video. You set the place, size, rotation and visibility of the watermark in the "Watermark" section. You can cut out a single-color background from the watermark itself.

Watermark and template are different sections. A watermark puts a picture or a short animation on top of the frame. A template combines two videos in one frame. About the latter, read what a template is.

The app does not remove someone else's watermark from the source video

The app has no such function. The "Watermark" section only adds your watermark on top of the frame. The app does not remove someone else's logo, caption or banner. It does not matter whether you shot the video yourself or downloaded it.

How to add your own watermark

  1. Open the project and go to the "Watermark" section.
  2. Turn on the "Add watermark" setting. While it is off, the other fields of the section are inactive.
  3. Press the button with a folder icon to the right of the "Watermark file" field. Choose the file in the "Select a file" window.
  4. Choose a value in the "Placement method" field: "Several areas (brush)" or "One area".
  5. Press "Add placement areas", mark the place on the frame and press "Done".

After that the "Placement areas added:" counter shows how many points are saved.

The "One area" placement method. The watermark is moved across the frame and stretched by the corner marker; "Done" saves the point: the counter becomes "Placement areas added: 1".

Which files work as a watermark

The file selection window accepts three formats: *.png, *.gif and *.mp4. The tooltip says: "Animations and videos are played back. We recommend *.png images with a transparent background".

If the file is damaged or cannot be read, the app does not accept it. It shows the "The watermark file cannot be read" window.

The watermark file is kept on your device. In the cloud, the app uploads it to the server together with the task. So cloud limits apply to the file. The size is no more than 1 GB, the resolution no higher than 4K. About the difference between the modes, read the Video creation on the device and in the cloud page.

Where the watermark will be: "Several areas" and "One area"

The "Placement method" field sets which editor opens with the "Add placement areas" button.

"Several areas (brush)". The app opens the "Watermark placement" window with a frame from the project video. The left mouse button paints an area. The right one undoes the last painting. The slider at the bottom changes the brush size. The mouse wheel does the same anywhere in the window: the step is one pixel, the scale is from 10 to 99. The painted area becomes a set of placement areas. The app collects points as the mouse moves. If you move the mouse fast, part of the trail stays painted but does not become a placement area. Move the brush slowly: this fills the area more densely. For each created video the app picks one place at random. The center of the watermark falls on this point.

The "Several areas (brush)" placement method. The left button paints, the right one removes the last painting, and the brush size is changed with the slider at the bottom or the mouse wheel: the second stripe is visibly thicker than the first.

"One area". The app opens the "Place the watermark" window. The watermark is visible on top of the frame. You drag it with the mouse and stretch it by the corners of the frame. There is one point, and the frame sets the size. The "Change size" setting does not work in this mode. The app takes the size right from the editor.

The editor needs a frame. Usually the app takes it from the project video. The exception is the "Periodic" export type. There the editor opens even without a video in the project. The editor opens after the app downloads a video from a source and takes a frame from it. In the "One area" mode the watermark file has to be chosen in advance. Otherwise the app shows the hint "Select a watermark file first".

How to vary size, rotation and visibility from video to video

Three settings take a random value for each created video. The value is taken from the range you set. Each setting has its own switch: "Rotate the watermark", "Change visibility", "Change size". By default all three are off. While a switch is off, the range has no effect. The range is set by a slider with two handles.

SettingWhat changesSlider limitsDefault values
"Rotate the watermark"the rotation angle of the watermarkfrom -180° to +180°from -15° to +15°
"Change visibility"how visible the watermark isfrom 1% to 100%from 15% to 35%
"Change size"the size of the watermarkfrom -100% to +100%from -10% to +10%

At 100% visibility the watermark is fully visible. At 1% it is barely noticeable.

What the "Adapt to videos of different resolutions" setting does

The app saves placement areas in pixels of the frame where you marked them. A project can hold videos of different resolutions. On a video with a smaller resolution the watermark may go beyond the frame border.

The "Adapt to videos of different resolutions" setting recalculates the areas for each resolution. The recalculation is proportional. An example from the tooltip. You marked the areas on a 1920x1080 video. The project also has a 1280x720 video. Without the setting, the watermark on it may go beyond the frame. With the setting, the areas adjust to the size.

How to remove the background of the watermark itself

The "Watermark chroma key" group is for this. Please turn on the "Watermark chroma key" setting. It is off by default. While the switch is off, the other fields of the group are inactive. The setting cuts the background out of the watermark. You set the background color yourself. The background becomes transparent. This setting does not affect the source video.

FieldWhat it setsDefault value
"Mode"how a match with the background color is counted"Chroma-based (green/blue background)"
"Select background color"the color that is cut out#00FF00
"Tolerance, %"a number from 1 to 10030
"Edge feather, %"a number from 0 to 10010

There are two modes. The tooltip in the app describes them word for word like this.

"Mode chroma-based - for a real green/blue background (ignores shadows and uneven lighting). Mode RGB color - for a solid uniform fill of any color, including white and black".

What the two numbers mean:

  • "Tolerance, %" - how much the color of a pixel may differ from the background color. The app still counts such a pixel as background. With a larger tolerance it cuts out more shades.
  • "Edge feather, %" - the softness of the cut edge. At 0 the edge is hard. The larger the number, the smoother the transition along the edge of the object.

You choose the background color in a separate window. It has an eyedropper with the tooltip "Pick a color from the screen". With the eyedropper you can pick a color right from the image on the screen.

The app cuts out the background on the original frame of the watermark. Rotation, visibility and size are applied after that.

What prevents video creation from starting

Before the start, the app checks the "Watermark" section. If the setting is on but data is missing, the app does not begin work. Possible messages:

  • "Choose a watermark file" - no file is chosen.
  • "File not found ... It may have been deleted." - the file was chosen, but it is no longer on the disk.
  • "The watermark file is damaged or cannot be read" - the file is in place, but it does not open.
  • "Add placement areas for the watermark" - no areas are marked.

Is the watermark visible before video creation

Not in the preview panel. It plays the source file as it is written on the disk. Neither the watermark nor other project settings will be on this frame.

The watermark is visible in two places.

In the "Place the watermark" window. This is the "One area" mode. The watermark file is drawn right on top of the frame. In the "Several areas (brush)" mode the watermark is not shown: the brush paints the area with a color.

In the finished preview. The "Preview" button creates a full video file with the current settings. The watermark will be in it. The preview goes through the same stages as bulk video creation.

The preview is always computed on your device, even if the cloud is selected in the project. It costs no credits. But it uses up one video of the daily limit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove someone else's watermark from a video?

Video Unique Booster does not do this. The app only puts your watermark on top of the frame. It cannot erase, smear or paint over someone else's watermark.

Can the watermark be shown only in part of the video?

No. The section has no settings for display time. The watermark is visible in the video from start to end. A *.gif animation and a video play and repeat while the video plays. A still image stays on the frame all the time.

Will the watermark be in the same place on all videos?

It depends on the placement method. In the "Several areas (brush)" mode the app picks the place at random. It takes it from the area you painted. Each created video gets its own place. In the "One area" mode there is one point. The watermark is placed at it on all videos.

Why does the "Add placement areas" button not open the window?

The editor needs a frame from the project video. The exception is the "Periodic" export type. There the app downloads a video from a source by itself. If no video is selected, the app opens the list of videos. It shows the message "No video file selected". If the file is no longer on the disk, "File not found ..." appears. Getting a frame does not always work. Then the "The video could not be opened" window opens with the text "A frame could not be taken from this video. Choose another video.". If the app folder is not accessible, the text is different: "The frame could not be saved. Check access to the application folder.".

Why does the watermark break video creation in the cloud?

The app uploads the watermark file to the server together with the task. The same limits apply to it as to source videos. The size is no more than 1 GB, the resolution no higher than 4K. If the file does not pass the limits, the app does not create a single video in the cloud. Please replace the watermark file with a smaller file or one with a lower resolution.
