Template: how to combine two videos into one

A template puts two videos into one frame. The main video comes from the "Imported videos" section. You choose the additional one separately. You set the position and size of both layers yourself. For each copy the app picks the additional video anew.

Why you need a template

Each copy gets its own second video track. The copies differ in the picture itself, not only in the settings. One main video gives a set of distinct copies.

A template does not replace a watermark. A watermark is laid over the frame. A template builds the scene itself.

Where the "Template" section is

The "Template" button is hidden in a collapsible card in the narrow column on the left. Please open the section like this:

  1. Open the project.
  2. In the narrow column on the left, expand the "OVERLAYS" card.
  3. Click "Template".

The same card holds "Watermark" and "Text". Until the card is expanded, the "Template" button is not on the screen.

What the "Use template" switch turns on

It turns on the whole feature. It is off by default. While it is off, the rest of the page is hidden.

With the switch on, the top card shows five rows.

RowWhat it shows or does
"Additional videos added:"how many files are in the list now
Button with a folder iconchoosing additional videos
"Template created:""Yes" after the layer layout is saved, "No" before that
"Adapt to videos of different resolutions"recalculates the layout for the resolution of the video being processed, on by default
"Create template"opens the "Template creation" window

Which videos take part

Main video. The files of the project's "Imported videos" section. Copies are created from them.

Additional video. A separate list. The button with a folder icon sets it. You can choose several files at once.

List rules:

  • a new choice replaces the whole list, it does not add to it;
  • to add one file to ten, choose all eleven again;
  • for each copy, a file from the list is picked at random;
  • an unsuitable file is not accepted into the list.

Rejected files are listed in the "Some files are not suitable for the template" window. The row for each file looks like this:

<file name> - damaged or unreadable
<file name> - an image, not a video

The app does not accept a single frame instead of a video.

Where the additional video starts

The "Start the additional video from a random segment" switch is on by default. Each copy takes the additional video from a new second. The point is picked at random, from zero to the full duration of the file. With the switch off, the additional video always starts from the first frame.

The app fits the duration on its own:

  • the additional video is shorter than the main one - it repeats until the end;
  • the additional video is longer than the main one - the extra part is cut off.

Order of steps

Please build the template in this order:

  1. Import videos into the "Imported videos" section.
  2. Open the "Template" section.
  3. Turn on the "Use template" switch.
  4. Click the button with a folder icon and choose the additional videos.
  5. Click "Create template". The "Template creation" window opens.
  6. Arrange both frames and click "Add checkpoint".
  7. Click "Done". The page shows "Template created: Yes".
  8. Turn on the random deviation switches you need.
  9. Start video creation with the "Start" button in the "Export" section.

Read about steps six and seven on the Template editor page. About step eight - on the Random layer deviations and chroma key page.

What you get in the frame

  • The result resolution equals the resolution of the main video. The template does not change it.
  • The scene background is a blurred copy of the main frame filling the whole frame. There will be no black bars.
  • The main video is a layer just like the additional one. You can shrink it, move it, rotate it and put it at the bottom.
  • No empty space is left in the frame. The blurred backdrop shows under the layers.

What to prepare in advance

  • A video in the project. Without it the "Template creation" window does not open.
  • A set of additional videos with the same orientation. The reason is on the what to check before starting page.
  • For the cloud: a file no larger than 1 GB and with a resolution no higher than 4K.

Frequently asked questions

How many additional videos can I choose?

There is no limit on the list length. For each copy the app picks one file at random.

Can I add a file to the ones already chosen?

No. A new choice replaces the whole list. Please choose all the files you need at once.

Why is there nothing on the "Template" page except one switch?

The "Use template" switch is off. The rest of the page is shown only with the switch on.

Will the template apply to all imported videos?

Yes. While the "Use template" switch is on, the template applies to every copy of every imported video.

How is a template different from a watermark?

A watermark lays an image or a short video over the frame. A template builds a scene from two videos and replaces the background with a blurred copy of the main frame.

Where can I see which file a copy got?

In the project's results table. The column is called "Template: Secondary video". Next to it is the "Template: Secondary video start" column.
