Updating the app and the video download module
Video Unique Booster checks for a new version on its own. It does this at every start. The app offers the new version in a separate window. An update is not installed without your consent. Until you click "Yes", the app downloads nothing. It replaces nothing. The video download module is updated separately from the app. The app uses this module to download videos from platforms.
How do I find out that a new version is out?
The check runs when the app starts. The server may have a version newer than yours. Then the app shows the "Update" window. The window says "Version ... is available". Next to it there is a short description of the changes and the question "Update now?". There are two buttons: "Yes" and "No".
The menu has no separate item for checking for updates. The check runs only at startup. The "No" answer applies only to this start. The next time you open the app, the question appears again. If there is no network or the server did not respond, the app starts as usual.
You can find your version in the menu at the top of the window. The "About the app" item, the "App version" field. Next to it there is a copy button. You can send this value to support.
What happens when you agree to update?
You clicked "Yes". The app opens a separate "VUB Updater" window. The window has a bar and a caption. The steps run in this order:
- "Checking for an update..." - the update window asks the server for update information. By this moment the app is already closed. It closes right after you click "Yes".
- "Stopping Video Unique Booster..." - the update window checks that the app is closed. If the app is still in memory, the window terminates it by force. This happens before the download, not after it.
- "Downloading the update..." - the app downloads the file. The app is already closed at this point.
- "Installing the update..." - the app replaces the old files with new ones.
- "Cleaning up outdated files..."
- "The update is finished. Please restart the app." - with a green success icon in front of the text.
The app closes right away, without a warning and without saving unfinished work. So finish your work before clicking "Yes". Wait for video creation to end. Wait for the download to end. Only then agree to the update.
After the update the app does not start automatically. Please close the update window. Then open Video Unique Booster again.
The update file is one archive with the whole new version. Its size is about 226 MB.
You need about 900 MB of free disk space beyond what is already used. That much is needed during the work: the archive itself plus the unpacked files. Afterwards the extra is deleted.
The time depends on your connection speed. The bar in the window shows percentages. The window shows neither the speed nor the time left.
What do I do if the download was interrupted?
An interrupted download cannot be resumed. After an interruption the update starts over: please start the update again. To do this, open Video Unique Booster. At the next start the app offers the new version again.
On a failure the window shows the line "The app could not be updated.", the reason and a tip. The tip differs. Different failures have different consequences.
| Reason in the window | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Could not get update information from the server: ..." or "The update archive is damaged or tampered with: ..." | Your version has not changed. Please try again later |
| "The update archive did not match the checksum..." | Please try again later, and if it repeats, write to support |
| Another reason, for example no disk space or no access to the folder | Replacing the files may have started. Please download the latest version from the website and install it over the current one |
The app writes the details to a log. The path to it is given in the failure text. Usually it is logs\updater.log in the app folder. If the folder is not writable, the path is different: %TEMP%\TekoSoftware\logs\updater.log.
Where do I download the latest version by hand?
On the website: https://videouniquebooster.com. The new version installs over the current one. You do not need to uninstall the old version.
Projects and settings are kept. The installer writes only the app's own files to the disk and does not touch your files. Details are on the Installing the app page.
Why update the video download module?
The video download module downloads videos from platforms. Platforms change their pages. An old module stops downloading videos from them. It is updated separately from the app. The app does not close while it updates.
There is a sign that the module is the cause. It is visible in the footer of the "Sources" section. There is a line "It looks like ClipSave is out of date: the same failure comes from different sources and different addresses. Check for a ClipSave update.". The version is there too: "Video download module: version ...". Before the first check it shows "Video download module: version unknown".
A failed download has other causes too. They are covered on the Video does not download page.
How do I update the video download module?
There are three ways. All of them need your consent. The module is never updated without confirmation.
When the app starts. If the app found a new version, it shows the "An update is available" window on the splash screen. The window says "A new version of the video download module is available. Do you want to update now?". The "No" answer applies until the end of this start. The next time you open the app, the question appears again.
With the button in the "Sources" section. The footer of the section has a circular arrow. It is next to the version number. The arrow color shows whether there is a new version. Gray - there is no new version, or the check has not run yet. Colored - the app found a new version.
- Open the "Sources" section.
- Click the circular arrow in the section footer.
- Wait for the answer. Clicking the gray arrow starts the check immediately.
Whatever the outcome, a manual check shows a window with the answer. The answers are: "The latest version of the video download module is installed.", "The video download module has been updated.", "The video download module was updated only in part. Try again later.", "The video download module is busy with other work right now. Repeat the check in a minute." or "The update check failed. Check your internet connection and try again.". The "updated only in part" answer means this. The module itself is updated to the latest version. But the helper JavaScript engine could not be downloaded. Because of this, YouTube may still return an incomplete set of video qualities.
The update itself shows the "Video download module update" window. The window has the caption "Downloading the update...", a bar and a "Cancel" button. At the end the caption changes to "Done". The window closes on its own.
When you open the "ClipSave" window. You open the window for downloading by link. The app checks the module version here too. It does this no more than once a day. If a new version is found, the app shows the same "An update is available" window.
While the "Sources" section is working, the check shows no messages. The reason is simple: the section also works at night, when nobody is at the computer.
What does the "Disable update checks for the video download module" switch do?
The switch is in the "Global settings" window. You can open it from the menu at the top of the window. The app marks this setting as an expert one. Please do not turn it on without a reason. It disables two automatic checks at once.
- The app stops checking for a new version of the video download module on its own.
- Together with the check, the automatic download of the helper JavaScript engine is disabled. Without it, YouTube may return an incomplete set of video qualities. It may also refuse to download. The engine is about two megabytes. The app downloads it on its own.
The switch does not disable clicking the circular arrow by hand. When the switch is on, that is the only way to update the module. The switch does not affect updates of the app itself.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the app close right after I agree to update?
The files of a running app are in use, and they cannot be replaced. So the update starts by stopping the app, even before the download. The update window keeps working.
The update was interrupted halfway. Does the app not work now?
The window says so directly. The line "The installed version is unchanged and can still be used" means the app files are not damaged. Another line may stand in its place. It suggests downloading the latest version from the website. In that case the file replacement had already started. Please install the latest version over the current one.
Can I disable update checks for the app itself?
There is no such setting. You can answer "No" to the update offer. The app starts as usual. At the next start the question appears again.
What does the error "The update file was not found: Updater.exe" mean?
The app folder does not have the file that installs the update. Please download the latest version from videouniquebooster.com. Install it over the current one. The error "There are not enough permissions to start the Updater.exe installer" is solved the same way. The other app messages are covered on the app messages page.
I updated the video download module, but videos still do not download
An old module is a common cause. But it is not the only one. Please check the state of the source group, the restrictions and the cookies file. Details are on the Sources page. If the app window turned white, see the App not responding page.
