Video uniquification settings reference, A to Z

This page answers one question. You see a label in the project window and want to understand what it is. Find the label in the table below, it is sorted alphabetically. The row gives the units, the slider limits, the value in a new project and a link to a detailed breakdown.

A setting has two handles, not one. They set not a value but the allowed spread. For each created copy the value is picked anew. This mechanism is covered in how uniquification works.

There are 77 uniquification settings in total. In a new project eight of them are on:

  • "Change brightness";
  • "Change contrast";
  • "Change sharpness";
  • "Scale video";
  • "Change video duration";
  • "Change volume" on the "Video sound" page;
  • "Change color saturation";
  • "Change color balance of midtones".

The other 69 are off. The last two settings of the list change nothing while the "Use color correction" switch is off. In a new project it is off too.

Settings that noticeably slow down video creation

The list is based on timing a short vertical video with sound. The first setting is more expensive than all the others.

  • "Stabilization". The most expensive uniquification setting. It adds more work than medium-level file compression.
  • "Use color correction". The switch itself is expensive: it turns on two filters at once.
  • "Rotate video". Before rotation the frame is enlarged, after rotation it is cropped.
  • "Overlay a grid on the video" together with the grid color and sizes.
  • "Adaptive sharpness".
  • "Change color temperature".
  • "Change sharpness".
  • "Noise reduction".
  • "Change color vibrance".
  • "Add vignette" and "Debanding".
  • "Frame border".
  • "Main video visibility", "Additional video visibility" and both corner roundings. Each frame of the layer is redrawn anew.
  • "Main video chroma key" and "Additional video chroma key". The color is compared pixel by pixel.

Two caveats to this list. "Overlay noise on the video" is computed quickly but makes the finished file noticeably heavier. "Keyframe interval" adds no work of its own at all.

Changing the frame rate costs more than any uniquification setting. It is on the "Performance" page: see the breakdown in quality and file size.

Frequently asked questions

Why did an enabled setting change nothing?

The value is picked from the spread between the handles. The default spread is symmetric, like from -10 to 10, and zero falls inside it. Some copies get a value close to zero. Please move the handles away from zero if you need a change on every copy.

Why is a setting missing from the project window?

Some settings are nested inside others, and a switch that is off collapses its whole card. An example: "Keyframe interval" is shown only when "Choose codec and container" is on. Corner rounding is shown inside the visibility card of the same layer.

Why do two settings have the same name?

The "Change volume" label is on two pages. "Audio equalizer" and its five bands work the same way. These are different settings for different tracks. One applies to the video sound, the other to the added music. Their values are drawn independently.

Where can I see which value a copy got?

In the project's results table: each setting has its own column there. The columns are covered in results table. There is one exception: the "Keyframe interval" setting has no column.
