Video Unique Booster global settings
Global settings apply to the whole app at once, not to one project. There are ten of them, and they are all in one window without tabs. The window opens from the header menu. It has one action button - "Save".
How they differ from project settings
| Global | Project settings | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | the whole app, all projects, all tabs | one project |
| Where they are edited | the "Global settings" window | the pages of the project tab |
| How they are saved | only with the "Save" button | with the button, with Ctrl+S, automatically when video creation starts |
| Do they go into the project settings file | no | yes |
| What happens to them in a new project | they do not change | factory values are used |
Read about project settings on the Projects and Moving project settings as a file pages.
How to open the window
- Click the three-bar button in the header of the main window.
- Choose the "Global settings" item.
The title tooltip in the window says, word for word: "These settings affect how the app works no matter which project is open".
The window has no tabs. All ten settings are in three groups without headings. The label of each setting is to the left of its switch.
All ten settings
| Label | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| "Skip downloading video thumbnails" | Does not create thumbnails in the "Imported videos" list. Importing videos into the app becomes about twice as fast | off |
| "Number of rows in the report table" | How many latest rows stay in the results table. From 10 to 999,999,999 | 5000 |
| "Disable notifications when the disk is full" | Turns off the desktop notification about low disk space | off |
| "Disable notifications on processor overheating" | Turns off the notification about processor overheating | off |
| "Disable notifications on high memory usage" | Turns off the notification about memory usage | off |
| "Disable device resource monitoring" | Removes the resource check before creating each video and hides the "CPU", "CPU temp", "RAM", "Disk" readings in the start bar | off |
| "Skip the video check on import" | Skips the video rotation check on import. The file readability check remains | off |
| "Log device state to a file during video creation" | Writes the device state to logs\resource_monitor.txt | off |
| "Disable the video creation watchdog" | Disables the automatic stop of a hung video creation | off |
| "Disable update checks for the video download module" | Turns off the automatic check for a new version of the download module and the download of the helper JavaScript engine | off |
All switches in the window are off by default. The only number field is "Number of rows in the report table".
How changes are saved
- The window has one action button: "Save".
- There are no "Cancel", "Apply", "Reset" or "Default" buttons in the window.
- There is no automatic saving. If you close the window with the cross, the changes are lost.
- Enter and Escape do not close the window. Only the cross closes it.
- You cannot restore the factory values from the interface. You will have to restore them by hand, switch by switch.
So the order is: make a change, click "Save" right away, and only then close the window.
Under the button there is a status line. It can show four texts:
Saving the settings...
The settings were saved.
The settings were not saved
Unexpected error while saving
When a setting takes effect
| When | Settings |
|---|---|
| Right away | video thumbnails, all three notifications, the video check on import, update checks for the video download module |
| From the next start of video creation | "Number of rows in the report table", "Disable device resource monitoring" |
| Only for video creations that start after the change | "Disable the video creation watchdog" |
| Right away and in full | the device state log |
This is a common source of confusion. You turned off resource monitoring during work, but the readings stayed in place and the speed did not change. This is not a failure: the setting takes effect from the next click on "Start".
Two settings for video import speed
Both speed up not video creation but importing videos into the app.
"Skip downloading video thumbnails". The full tooltip text:
The "Imported videos" section holds the list of your videos. By default this setting is off and imported videos come with thumbnails.
Turning this setting on disables thumbnail creation in the app interface, which cuts the time it takes to import videos into the app by 50%.
"Skip the video check on import". Skips the rotation check. The cost: for a video shot rotated, the app will not offer a fix. The file readability check on import remains: a broken file is rejected in any case.
Number of rows in the report table
The full tooltip text:
Once video creation starts, a report table appears. That table holds data on the number of latest videos you set.
Values that are too high make the app interface hold a lot of information and use more device resources.
The smallest number of rows is 10.
This setting is ignored if the number of threads in the "Export" section is larger than the value you set. The number of rows shown then equals the number of threads.
Only finished rows are pushed out. If only unfinished rows are left above the limit, the limit is exceeded temporarily.
Three notification switches
Three settings turn off Windows desktop notifications: about low disk space, about processor overheating and about high memory usage.
Only the notification itself is turned off. Pausing and stopping new threads for these reasons keep working. There is one exception: the "Disable device resource monitoring" setting turns off the pauses too.
Expert block
Four settings in this window change the app's behavior more deeply than the others.
"Disable device resource monitoring". The full tooltip text:
By default VUB checks the device resources before creating every video. If the disk is full, VUB notifies you and waits until space is freed up.
The check takes time.
Without the resource check new threads start noticeably faster.
The "CPU", "CPU temp", "RAM" and "Disk" readings at the bottom of the window stop being shown as well.
The setting applies to every export type. Pauses and notifications about processor overheating and memory load are switched off as well. You will have to watch the resources yourself.
"Log device state to a file during video creation". The full tooltip text:
While creating videos VUB writes the device state (processor load, temperature, memory) into a text file. The file sits next to the app logs: folder "logs", file "resource_monitor.txt".
Useful if the device shuts down unexpectedly: after a restart, open this file and see what the readings were before the shutdown.
There is one system for all tabs, so a single record is written for the whole device even when several projects are running at once.
"Disable the video creation watchdog". The full tooltip text:
An expert setting. It disables the video creation watchdog - it will no longer interrupt a hung video creation automatically.
Turn this on only if the watchdog wrongly interrupts your legitimate but very long video creation. At your own risk: if the video processing module hangs on a damaged file, you may have to close the app by hand.
"Disable update checks for the video download module". The full tooltip text:
An expert setting. The app stops checking on its own whether a new version of the video download module has been released.
Along with the check, the automatic download of the helper JavaScript engine is disabled too. Without that engine YouTube may return an incomplete set of video qualities and refuse to download. You will have to update the video download module by hand - with the circular arrow at the bottom of the "Sources" section.
Frequently asked questions
I closed the window with the cross, and the changes were not saved. Is this a bug?
No. The window saves changes only with the "Save" button. It has no automatic saving.
How do I restore the factory values?
Not from the interface. You will have to turn everything off by hand. The factory state is simple: all nine switches are off, and the row number field holds 5000.
I turned off resource monitoring, but the readings are still there
The setting takes effect from the next start of video creation. Click "Start" again.
Where is the device state file?
In the app folder: logs\resource_monitor.txt. Read about the other files on the Where your files are page.
Should I disable the video creation watchdog?
Only if it stops your real work. The cost of disabling it is fair: you will have to stop a hung video creation yourself, and sometimes close the whole app.
I set 5000 rows, but the table has fewer
The number of rows cannot be smaller than the number of threads. If more threads are set than rows, the app shows as many rows as there are threads.
Why are there no project settings in the window?
Project settings are stored in the project itself, not in the app. They are edited on the tab pages. This way one project can be set up differently from another.
