Names of created videos and the save folder

The app builds the name of a new file by itself. It has no configurable template. What the name consists of depends on two settings of the "Export" section: "How to save:" and the export type. The extension is set by the "Performance" section. Below is the exact scheme for all combinations.

Where does the app save files?

The folder is set in the "Export" section, in the "Folder to save videos to" row. The field is read-only. The path is put in with the button with a folder icon. Without a folder the start does not begin.

Inside it the app creates a run folder VUB_result_<date_time>. There is a separate one for each press of "Start". With the "Straight into the save folder" layout no such folder is created at all.

The app creates folders inside it silently, without questions or confirmations.

How do the three "How to save:" layouts differ?

A new project has the "By sets" item selected.

ItemWhat appears on the diskDoes the file name change
"By sets"the VUB_result_<date_time> folder, inside it the pack0, pack1, pack2 folders; each has one copy of each videowith the "One-time" export type, no
"Into the results folder"the VUB_result_<date_time> folder; all files are in ityes, the copy number is added
"Straight into the save folder"the files are right in the save folder, without subfoldersyes, the copy number, date and time are added

With the "One-time" export type the "By sets" layout does not change the name. With the "Endless" and "Periodic" types the date and time are added to the name.

What is the file name made of?

Notation in the table below:

  • name - the source file name without the extension. If the project has a second file with the same name, a number is added to its name: name_2, name_3;
  • N - the copy number; numbering starts from zero;
  • date_time - the moment the task was queued, as ddmmyyyy_HHMMSS, for example 06092026_141203;
  • ext - the extension from the selected container, mp4 by default.
"How to save:""One-time" export type"Endless" and "Periodic" types
"By sets"VUB_result_<date_time>\packN\name.extVUB_result_<date_time>\packN\name_<date_time>.ext
"Into the results folder"VUB_result_<date_time>\name_N.extVUB_result_<date_time>\name_N_<date_time>.ext
"Straight into the save folder"<save folder>\name_N_<date_time>.ext<save folder>\name_N_<date_time>.ext

The order of the parts is always the same: the source file name, the copy number, the date and time stamp, the extension. The separator is an underscore. In the "By sets" layout the copy number is in the folder name, not the file name.

The date and time stamp is added in all combinations except two. It is absent with the "One-time" type together with the "By sets" or "Into the results folder" layout. The reason is simple: endless and periodic export have no end of the queue, and a second round would write a file to the same path.

Why do the numbers start from zero?

Copy numbering starts from zero. The first copy gets number 0, the second 1. The set folders are named pack0, pack1, pack2. The suffix of the first copy is _0.

With the "Endless" export type the copy number runs on. It does not reset, so packN folders keep appearing without limit.

Why does the name have the day first and then the month?

The stamp is written in "day, month, year" order: 06092026_143012 is September 6, 2026, 14:30:12. Sorting by name in File Explorer does not give chronological order. Files from different months get mixed up. For time order, sort the folder by date modified.

The stamp is counted in seconds. Three copies of one video can get the same stamp. Then only the copy number tells them apart. That is why the number is in the name.

Where does the extension come from?

The extension is set by the "Container" list on the "Performance" page. While the "Choose codec and container" switch is off, the extension is always mp4. The source file does not affect the extension: a .mov file with the switch off gives .mp4.

There is a case when the extension turns out different. The app falls back to the H.264 + AAC + mp4 combination if the codec pair does not suit the container on this device. This happens with a project that came from another device. There is no message on the screen.

What happens if the name matches a file that is already there?

A file with the same path is replaced without a question. There is no way to restore the previous file.

A row in the results table is created per file path. So two copies with the same path get one row instead of two. Such a replacement is not visible in the report.

The app tells two different videos with the same name apart by itself: a number is added to the name of the second and following ones - name_2, name_3.

How to avoid this?

  • Choose the "Into the results folder" layout. Then the copy number is added to the name.
  • Or do not save straight into the save folder. With the other layouts each run writes to its own folder with a date and time, and there are no old files there.
  • Before each start choose an empty save folder. Then there will be no old files in it.

One more cause of replacement is the "Delete and recreate" action of the similarity check. A copy that is too similar is deleted, and a new one is written to the same path. This is the setting at work, not a name clash.

Can the layout be changed during work?

The "How to save:" list is not locked during work, but it is better not to change it. The run folder is calculated once, when "Start" is pressed. The layout is reread for each task. Because of this, the rest of the batch is laid out by a different rule. For example, packN folders appear right in the save folder instead of inside VUB_result_....

What are the files ending in .part?

This is a draft of a download from the cloud. The name looks roughly like this: name_0_06092026_141203.mp4.1a2b3c4d.part. After the download the draft is renamed to the real name. A download that breaks off leaves such a file on the disk. The app deletes old drafts by itself, but you can also delete them by hand.

Where do other name rules apply?

  • The window for creating video from images. It has its own rule: VUBGenerated_<ddmmyyyy_HHMMSSms>.mp4. The extension is always mp4; the folder is set in the window itself.
  • The file name rule in the ClipSave window. It sets the name of a downloaded video, not a new one. It has its own macros. More on the Download by link page.
  • Downloading from cloud storage. You choose the folder yourself; the name is restored from the run path.
  • Preview. The preview file is written to a temporary folder under a random name. More on the Preview window page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set my own name template for new videos?

No. The app has no configurable template for the name of a new file. You can affect it only through the source file name, the layout and the export type.

Why are there fewer files than I ordered?

The cause is usually failed tasks or the "Delete and recreate" action of the similarity check: a copy that is too similar is deleted. Please look at the statuses in the results table.

Can the path become too long?

Yes. Up to 18 characters are added to the source file name, and up to 26 characters plus packN to the result folder. The app shortens a path that is too long by itself: the start of the name is cut, while the copy number, date and time stay. Please choose a save folder closer to the root of the disk.

Tasks are marked as failed, and there are no files in the folder. Why?

Most often the result folder could not be created. This happens without write rights, with an unavailable network path and with a path that is too long. There is no separate window with the reason here; the details are written to the app log.

The project is open on another computer, and the start does not begin. Why?

The save folder comes along with the project, but this device has no such path. The check sheet shows the line "Choose another folder to save videos to". Please choose the folder again with the "Select folder" button.
